It’s critical that people from all walks of life are equally represented in this field, whether it’s historic or contemporary practitioners. This allows minority groups to see themselves in this field and feel more confident perusing it. It’s also important to be conscious of where you’re getting your research and references from, using a range of reputable sources from different social and ethnic viewpoints.

An important part of field work is knowing where it’s appropriate to collect specimens. Lots of plants are endangered, so when encountering them, it’s important not to pick them for further inspection. It’s important to have common sense when taking flora, for instance don’t take any if there are only a few and in areas of abundance, only take what is necessary. There are many animals that require plants live. A prime example of this are pollinators, especially bees, which are endangered, so leaving plenty of flowers for them is vital. In addition, the environmental impact of materials, for example paper and packaging of materials that are often made of plastic.
